The real independence day

The president declared tomorrow a holiday - one day after Independence Day. This is the sort of thing she does. Once a holiday falls on a weekend, the president feels the need to shower the public with long weekends. It works for her ratings, I suppose. Why thank you, Ms. President.

She’s grabbing onto what she can, with the hot water she’s bathing in now.

Shall we see any serious scalding in the near future? Let’s wait and see.

Pictures of the 3rd Manila Jazz Festival

I was so glad to have been at the 3rd Manila Jazz Festival and I have been talking with my friends about how great the experience was. :) Thanks to Reynaldo Ngo, there are pictures that would help me as I reminisce what transpired that evening. I got the link on his comment on my blog entry. At least you will see how passionate the performers were that night.

Commuting: MRT rides

The MRT - my favorite ride. Every morning, I ride it. I rush to Quezon Avenue station in Quezon City so that I could ride the train from there to Guadalupe. It certainly beats having to for an hour or so on the bus.

There are moments when the platform is really crowded. When I get to the station by 7:30 or 8:00 am, the volume of the crowd waiting for a train is quite large already but it’s still quite manageable, I think. At least it is for me. I tend to get to the station at a time when the trains aren’t so full yet so I could stand in the train and not get squished in between other commuters. Well, at least until Cubao station where passengers really fill up the train like sardines stuck in a can. There are skipping trains that also arrive at the station so those times that I chance upon them are happy times because I can still read a book while in the train.

Sometimes, riding the MRT can be frustrating. Why? Because sometimes the platform is so crowded already that people are not let in until after a train or two has already passed. When that happens, I get late to work. (Terrible, terrible!) Aside from that, there are times when people get so pushy! And I mean it literally. There was a time I got separated with my sister and mother, who were commuting with me.

Bringing color to the otherwise gray CBD

When you think of the Makati CBD, you think of gray: gray buildings, gray corporate attire.

Not anymore.

The invation of the call centers has change the landscape of Makati. No longer are the streets deserted at night, and now there are as much people wearing jeans and sneakers as there are wearing slacks and stilletos.

The rising number of employees working at night brought on a a renewed competition between 7-11 and Mini Stop, resulting to branches sprouting in every corner. Fast food chains have also started to pop up around Makati, the latest being Jollibee and (of course) McDonald’s fronting Ayala Avenue.

In all the years I’ve been going and living in Makati, I’ve never thought the city would change this much. Can’t say I hate it though.

3rd Manila Jazz Festival

Greenbelt 1’s Expo Exchange was packed last Friday night! It was the third Manila Jazz Festival. Featured were: the Jewelmer Jazz Band, Subconcept, Johnny Alegre Affinity, Satya and Jamie Oehlers Quartet. I have never seen a live performance by jazz artists except for the one by Majam (back in my college days).

Jazz is the kind of music that never ceases to amaze me because of the passion of the people playing that kind of music. The guitar guy from Subconcept really had his facial expressions. Seeing that was really amusing, in a sense because even though there is shownmanship, you know that there is such a love for what he is doing that simply shines through.

Johnny Alegre Affinity was awesome. Tots Tolentino was on sax and I can’t help but be in awe. The sax is something I love listening to because it sounds so soulful. Meanwhile, the bass of the Jamie Oehlers Quartet was almost getting drowned out by the other pieces but nevertheless it was quite good too.

Pretty flags all in a row

I passed by the Guadalupe Bridge this morning on my way to work and noticed that Philippine flags were lining the bridge. I was dumbstruck for a few seconds, trying to figure out which visiting head of state the government was trying to impress this time.

Then it clicked. Independence day is on the 12th! Oo nga no!
