Only 5% of Filipinas are beautiful

Dove - the beauty company - is sponsoring a survey of “beauty” in several countries including the Philippines and they have discovered a very interesting statistic.

The study shows that only 5% of Filipinas perceive themselves as beautiful. There appears to be a lack of self esteem in a lot of our women. Why is this so? Is it because we’re particularly shy? Do Filipino men have such a high standard of beauty? Is it really all about what Filipinas see on TV or on Ads.

Media plays a huge part in the flagging self-esteem of Filipinas. 55% of Filipinas feel inadequate when they look at beautiful, perfect women in magazines and 77% agree that beauty advertising is designed to encourage women to change their appearance.

Perhaps the survey has too few samples but I personally do not believe that Filipinas have self esteem this low. The current market of beauty products argues with my belief though as there are a lot of beauty products out there and a lot of women really want to have whiter complexion, shinier hair, thinner bodies or flawless skin. So does this mean that a lot of Filipino women really don’t like how they look?

I think we can try to solve this starting by a procedure that does not even require surgery. To all Filipino men out there, next time you see your sister, mother, or girl friend, compliment them. Maybe by the end of this day you have helped raise a few self esteems.

i was going to blog about this. bah!

i’ve read somewhere (in connection with the dove campaign) that this perception can be attributed to getting the approval of one’s family and friends. serves us right for being pintaseros and pintaseras *sigh*

well. it’s probably because we highly value what other people think. in our culture, our conformity is how people see us– and not how we see our selves.

    *sigh*

I have personally never understood filipinas’ hang-up with white skin. I mean half the white folks who can afford it ignore all warnings and stay in the sun to lose the pale skin, yet many Filipinas who can ill afford it spend millions on dangerous creams that will make their skin white. I personally believe the coffee-cream color of most Filipinas makes them some of the best-looking women in the world. Anyway, it should start with someone influential in the media standing up and trying to make the media portray actual Filipino people, and then maybe the easily influenced ladies will start believeing that they are worth more than they seem to believe.
