Jeepney Tales

Taxis seem to vanish whenever I go out of the house nowadays.

I was riding a jeep going to the bank this afternoon when the driver suddenly stops in the middle of the street. Apparently, he saw a friend across the street and proceeded to have a conversation.

Yes, right in the middle of the lane.

It was a good thing there was hardly any traffic so the vehicles behind us went over the counterflow lane to pass us. Unfortunately, jeepney drivers also do this kind of thing during traffic.

Manila, My Manila

At the lobby of Greenbelt 3, there are really lovely pictures of Manila. Some are pictures of the same places but each photograph has a different twist. There are street scenes wherein the various elements of Manila could be seen. And you can also vote for the pictures you really love. I particularly liked a photograph showing the plate upon which the Mi Ultimo Adios was engraved and there are reflections of the Philippine flags. It’s really nice. There are also pictures of the Manila City Hall taken from various angles.

More Books on Sale

We love our books here in Manila right? So, anyway, A Different Bookstore is going on a big-big-BIG book sale from the 14th to the 16th with discounts up to 70% and buy 1 take 1 offers on selected titles.

Their Eastwood branch is also giving a chance for a 15 second book spree by simply purchasing a copy of Story Philippines (P120). Winners have a chance to get all the books that they can fit into the Story Philippines book bag for free. The raffle will be on October 14 and 15, 8pm at the Eastwood Citywalk 2 courtyard and only those present at the raffle are eligible for the contest.

Books + Sale = *sigh*

The Sale Map! Power Books is having a Warehouse Sale on October 14, 15, 17-22 at Pioneer St, Mandaluyong City. If you need directions, just ask since I worked near the area a year before. But I’m not sure I can exactly go with you. ^^;

Buy One Take One

My brother watched Transporter 2 at SM Fairview and he said the tickets were Buy 1 Take 1.

What’s going on?! And why haven’t they publicized this move?

Weird. But considering that two of my friends said they were the only ones inside the theater when they watched Herbie Fully Loaded at SM Fairview, it was only a matter of time before they did something like this.

Good news

For the women, that is.

Schu is having a mega sale at SM Megamall on October 14 – 16.

From their Multiply page:

Mark the dates: from Oct 14-16, schu goes on its Buy-Two-for-the-Price-of-One Sale! Bring everyone along! This is the best time to do your Christmas Shopping!

See you at the 2/F of SM Megamall, Bldg A, beside Clinica Manila!

I have a secret

And I’m actually willing to part with it.

In that long stretch of Pablo Ocampo (formerly Vito Cruz) in the Manila area, blocks before you reach Taft Avenue (if you’re coming from Makati), stands a big white house that looked like it’s been there forever. If you happen to pass by it a week or two before Christmas, you’d see a long line of people waiting to get inside as early as 8 o’clock in the morning.

No, it’s not a museum; it’s a cake shop. The best cake shop in Manila. In my opinion (and the people who line up there every year) anyway.

Let me introduce you to Becky’s Kitchen. I’ve only tried two of their cakes, and I’m still kicking myself for not gorging on them while I was still living less than 4 kilometers away from them.

Aside from the usual favorites, they also sell cakes you won’t find in other bake shops. Like the Potato Cake. Don’t ask me how that taste like.

They also have brownies, ensaymadas and fruitcakes.

And chocolate mousse. You HAVE to try their chocolate mousse. *drools*

Unfortunately, there are only two branches of Becky’s Kitchen in Manila: In Pablo Ocampo and Valle Verde. But believe me, they’re worth the trip.

Only 5% of Filipinas are beautiful

Dove – the beauty company – is sponsoring a survey of “beauty” in several countries including the Philippines and they have discovered a very interesting statistic.

The study shows that only 5% of Filipinas perceive themselves as beautiful. There appears to be a lack of self esteem in a lot of our women. Why is this so? Is it because we’re particularly shy? Do Filipino men have such a high standard of beauty? Is it really all about what Filipinas see on TV or on Ads.
