Billboards, where art thou?

I was looking out the window of the MRT on the way to Makati when the train left the Boni station. I was surprised that instead of seeing the towering billboards before crossing the Pasig river, I was able to see the horizon.

What happened?

Were they ordered to remove the structure or are they building a bigger one to match the huge billboard across the river?

Going back SM North

Last night, I decided to take a shuttle from SM North to where I live. Anyhow, I needed stickies so I dropped by National Bookstore on SM North’s main building, the one on the ground floor. I was surprised to find out that they changed their layout because there were many Filipino graphic novels soemwhere in the middle of the store now, and the paper supplies shelves have been moved to. There was no more of the Best Buy stickies so I got Post Its.

When I went out of National Bookstore, I saw the Milko stand. That is where they sell cheap but fairly good icecream. At Php 10 per scoop, that’s really good :D I thought to myself that I ought to get a cone but knowing that there’s takoyaki at the Samurai stall near the grocery section, I headed there and bought myself some takoyaki. It’s still Php 25 per 4 pieces of it.

DEC’s was still there and I got 3 pieces of almond cake at Php 6 apiece. My mom and sister were happy to have eaten those after quiet a while already. There’s no more Plato Wraps stall. No more Mr. Popper stall either. I miss the tofu pops and the golden bun from that stall. Zagu is in that area now. So is kakaning Pilipino.

There’s also the construction at the former parking space in front of Supersale. I forgot to ask what it was but maybe we’ll find out sooner or later.

The SM North I used to go to frequently when I was still a student has changed much. Considering that I haven’t been there for months - the changes happened very fast but some things are still there like the takoyaki stall, Milko and DEC.

Checkpoints

There will be checkpoints all over the metro, as I have seen on the news this morning.

Actually, I have been on a jeep one night when a checkpoint happened. These checkpoints are all over the city so that those with motives of bombing pulic places will be apprehended even before they do something.

Here are some things to note so you would not be surprised.

  • Checkpoints will be at various points of the metro.
  • The checkpoint should be well-lit.
  • There must be a proper checkpoint sign.
  • Passengers are not really required to go down the vehicle. It’s more like a vehicle inspection.
  • If you have firearms, etc. you might be apprehended, especially if you don’t have proper documentation.

Keep watching the news for any similar announcements.

Pinoy Big Brother’s big winner

Pinoy Big Brother has finally ended with the big winner turning out to be housemate Nene.

My mom was telling me that she really thought it was Nene that people would vote for because she is a very strong person and that she was the one who really was consistent all that time that she was in the Pinoy Big Brother house. My mom was gushing about how much Nene wanted to see her mom after being declared as the big winner. She was more excited seeing her mom than being awarded the prize by the channel’s executive.

In a way, all the housemates in Pinoy Big Brother are winners. Why? Well, they get TV exposure and more money out of being instant celebrities. They could use that money to provide for their families. Also, there are those who want to become artistas so they got their chance to be seen on TV. My mom also commented something about Say who seems to be using her TV exposure to extreme lengths just to become famous. Maybe, maybe not. All I know is that I am glad that it’s over and I am hoping for better stuff on TV soon.

Christmas cheer?

I recall my sister mentioning last night that she couldn’t feel the Christmas cheer. Sure there are so many bazaars, fairs, activities and all that but she couldn’t feel Christmas-y if you know what I mean. It must be the depressing news that is all over the country :(

The surveys point out that the Filipinos are disappointed in the president and that is something sad. With all the controversy around her, the president still goes on with the things that she has to do including the ASEAN summit. The Garci thing is still on going and some of us are dreading the increase in the Meralco charges. Maybe there are also people who are doubting if they will get a Christmas bonus because some businesses have suffered in the past year.

Despite all that, I do believe that we could still have that Christmas cheer. Well, it’s not just supposed to be seasonal anyway. If we keep on hoping for the best and maintaining a positive outlook while going on with our lives, things are possible.

Easy on a Sunday morning

One of the best things about Sundays in Manila is the music.

Particularly the music being played in the FM station, 102.7.

What better way to relax than to listen to songs from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s?

Encounters of the Insurance kind

First encounter: Filing a claim
All is well. The agent who attended to us was amiable and even gave us her business card with her direct line. Was told to follow up after a week.

Second encounter: Follow up #1
Called their office on schedule. Was told that only the charges for my mother’s treatment will be reimbursed, not the equipment bought as part of the treatment. Fine. Was told to wait again for claim to be processed.

(An almost week-long holiday passed)
