The cold season is upon us

Everyone I encounter these days whether in and outside the house seems to be either sniffling or spitting out phlegm.

Summer really is approaching and the heat’s starting to make going out — and sometimes staying in — unpleasant for everybody. I guess this is the time to love one’s office, even if only for the air conditioning. Pity us those who work at home though *sigh*

Tiesto to spin at Manila PICC Forum March 31st

Eight years ago, this kind of news would have been the highlight of my life for weeks on end. Having been a full-time participant in the East Coast American Rave scene back in the day, this would have been an event not to miss (of course, Tiesto wasn’t much of a name back then!) But even as the passing years have seen the significance of partying diminish to almost non-existance, the article in today’s Philippine STAR (page C-8) didn’t fail to catch my eye (mostly because you’d rarely find electronica-based events noted in a major newspaper in the U.S., especially if it wasn’t a “Save-our-children-from-the-Devil’s-music” type of article).

It seems the world-famous DJ is releasing a new installment of his In Search of Sunrise mix compilation series (#5 -due out April 25th). If you’ve enjoyed Tiesto’s grand sweeping style of majestic (yet not beat-you-over-the-head) type of trance, I’m sure he won’t stray far from the norm on this release or during his live set on March 31st at the Manila PICC Forum.

The article states that the event is being produced by World Wide Womb in partnership with Soundsgood Music Marketing, and being presented by Addict Moble, Motorola, and Smirnoff Vodka. (hmmm…parties sponsored by cell-phone companies and alcohol brands…there’s something we never saw 8 years ago!!). Anyway, check Odyssey and O Music & Video Outlets for tickets or call 897-2676. There’s also Tiesto’s official website.

NOTE: Both the STAR article and Tiesto’s site claim that his remix of Sarah McLachlan’s Silence track (released in 2000) was “the first house track ever broadcast on daytime radio in North America.” I’m not sure who tracks these stats, but surely there were others previous to this, i.e C&C Music Factory, Snap!, 2 Unlimited, M/A/R/R/S, Information Society, etc- all who had hits previous to the turn of the millenium. But for an undoubtedly great show of some of the greatest trance style of the past 6 years…check out Tiesto at the end of the month!!!

American Manila Memorial

A little ways up McKinley Road from Makati is the American Manila Memorial. I don’t know if the historical significance is the same to non-Americans, but the place is still worth a visit for the vast expanse of white cross markers, the engraved marble names and the meticulously groomed landscape. Luckily, the smog-gray sky blew over right as I arrived, leaving a gorgeous blue and puffy clouds.

Bad cops, bad feminists

Had a run in with two Makati cops at 2 a.m. on a near-deserted portion of Makati Avenue last night. How can you tell if they are serious about issuing a traffic violation ticket? Watch if they write your name on the ticket right away. Delaying tactics usually mean they just want to scare you and are giving you time to bribe them. How did my friends and I get out of it? Well, it was a combination of things, but begging and playing up the helpless females factor helped a lot. *insert eye-rolling emoticon*

Street Music (For a Cause)

If you’re in the Ayala area, check out this group of blind musicians, jammin’ away around Park Sqaure 2 (West Drive & Ayala Center Terminal, I think…i’m sorry- I still haven’t got street names down yet!)

Drop some pesos in their donation box..They’re usually out around mid-day.
Here’s a clip of them playing live.

A Vegetarian Dream!

…in a heavenly setting!

Someone suggested that we stop at Sonya’s Garden during our visit to the Taal Volcano in Tagaytay last week…
Couldn’t have been more perfect!

Organic salad, topped with crisp cucumbers, mangos, melons and a delicious homemde dressing, followed by freshly baked bread with a pesto spread, mushroom pate, and white cheese. All this followed by wonderful linguine pasta with choices of tomato, salmon or a white cheese sauce with chicken.

And the best thing: A mango/mint/lemonade mix that was out of this world.
All finished off with sugary fried plantains and fresh mint tea.

By far the best meal we’ve had since arriving here a month ago! Amazing food in a gorgeous setting of gardens and flowers. Next time we’re staying over night at the Bed & Breakfast…you get either a lunch or dinner along with breakfast..we can’t wait to return!!!

Recommended to all city dwellers- vegetarian or otherwise!!

Wowowee back ‘by popular demand’

If you were able to tune in today to ABS-CBN, you’ve probably encountered the Wowowee advertisement. The variety show, recently hit by tragedy where 74 people were trampled to death, will once again roll on your TV screens starting tomorrow “due to public demand.”

According to Ricky Lo’s entertainment column, “before the usual format (games such as Bigat-10, Tigasin, Willie of Fortune and Pera O Bayong, etc.), the show will be ushered in by five special episodes which dramatize the stories of past Wowowee P1-million winners” a la “Maalaala Mo Kaya?”

I wonder if this time around the show will remain true to its fun, lively and high-spirited theme. *sigh*

Land of the Malls and English Speakers

I came across this travel reviews about Manila in Yahoo.com. While several countries warned their citizens abour coming to Manila, apparently, many who DID make it here were surprised and thoroughly enjoyed their stay.

It warms my heart to see all these positive reviews, but after reading 2 pages worth of review, it seems that our redeeming values are our malls and competency for English. Oh, there are the gorgeous beaches and beautifully preserved and restored historical sites, but yeah, we have great malls.

2 Explosions rock Metrowalk shopping district

Two explosions rocked the Metrowalk shopping district in Ortigas a few hours before President Arroyo declared the State of National Emergency lifted. According to Philippine National Police chief Arturo Lomibao, the explosions occured around 9:45AM in Metrowalk’s parking area. The explosion came from under a van. A second explosion then came and this one hit near the Eastern Police district. There were no reported injuries and the PNP claims they were the target of the explosion.
