Multipurpose Cabs?

004_20061012.jpg

Have you ever hitched a washing machine to the back of your cab? I think I’ve also seen a cab hitched with a couch before. Anyway, this is just an accident waiting to happen.

You don’t have money anymore and it’s still days before sweldo. What do you do with only a few pesos in your pocket? You scrimp. You scrimp on food. But scrimping doesn’t have to hurt. You just have to be creative. Depending on how you see it, bad times can be breeding ground for creative culinary adventures.

Eid’l Fitr Holiday!

ramadan.jpg

Just in case you still haven’t heard (you probably just came out of a thousand year slumber), Malacanang has declared October 24, 2006, a Tuesday, as a regular holiday throughout the country. Proclamation no 1155 says it aims “to promote cultural understanding and integration, the entire Filipino nation should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr.”

Old Manila, My Manila

I was metro-hopping when I came across this entry over at the Bangkok Metroblog. It got me thinking about Manila when I was a child.

(Following text in Taglish. You’ve been warned.)

Doggie Attack @ The Block

dog.JPGSince The Block opened at SM North Edsa, things just went a little more interesting in this mall.

Last week, I happened to be in the said place because of my so-called attempt to have a work-out. As I stepped in the escalator, I noticed that there were a lot of people gathered in the stage located in the second floor area. Being a naturally curious person (a.k.a usisera), I investigated on the matter.

As I was coming closer, I instantly realized that it was a dog show!! Yipee! A dog show. For someone who can’t afford the price and the time of taking care of these pure breed dogs, this was such a delight to me and I almost forgot my appointment.

Staging Us

Herbert Go and Dennis Marasigan exchange glances of approval without having to say a word. It’s the second day of auditions for the forthcoming Tanghalang Pilipino and Department of Tourism co-production, “A Walk Back in Time”, and the two rather unassuming theater advocates – Herbert, the erstwhile Artistic Director, and Dennis, the man who has been appointed to succeed him- seem pleased by the wealth of talent befitting the resident drama company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

“Very good,” praised Dennis, right after a particularly impressive long-haired tenor finished his audition with a graceful cartwheel.

Balot-Balot

Beef Salpicao with Fried Rice A quick way to transport yourself to the province is to eat your meal on banana leaves. It’s even more enjoyable if you use your hands to eat and have this banana leaf-lined meal al fresco. Ay, sarap. I ordered this meal from Balot Balot Republic. A very flavorful Beef Salpicao with fried rice, extra tomato and salted egg. This meal cost around P75. How I wish I were eating this meal by the beach though with a view of the waves and white sand instead of a view of office buildings and smog!

UP to raise tuition fee three-fold

The University of the Philippines has just circulated a primer regarding it’s planned tuition fee increase. The increase is needed “in the face of inflation and the rate of increase in the cost of education services.”

As an open-minded UP student, I support the Tuition Fee increase and the re-bracketing of the STFAP specifically because of the obvious lack of funds from the University. There is no doubt in my mind that a Tuition Fee increase will help the University in the long run, but let me reiterate that there is still a need for higher state subsidy.

However, a Tuition Fee increase of more than 3 times of the current rates is perhaps a steep amount to request from the currently enrolled students. A staggering of the fee increase over the next 5 years will allow those currently enrolled time to adjust to the new rates and will allow those who wish to enroll in the future time to adjust their finances.

Isang katanungan…

When you hail a cab and the cab driver quotes you a fixed price to your destination instead of using the meter, what do you do?

Do you heave a sign of resignation and get in? Or do you get the hell out of his cab and slam the door?
