Marathon-for-a-Cause Marks Public Quest for Peace
The first-ever Run for PEACE, a simultaneous marathon initiated by the country’s local government units and training institutions, was held recently in 17 regions nationwide, including NCR, where over 3,100 runners had gathered at the Headquarters of the Philippine Army (HPA) Grandstand at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City.
Professional runners, new police recruits and trainees, fitness enthusiasts, and families all convened early to support the advocacy event, which was organized by the Police National Training Institute and co-sponsored by Pocari Sweat Health Drink. Run for PEACE was also supported by the Metro Manila Runners Club, The Fort Striders Club, and the Philippine Public Safety College. Proceeds were used for the improvement local government facilities and services.
Participants were fielded in four categories - 3K, 5K, 10K, and 21K runs - and divisions for both those below and above 12 years old. Reynaldo de los Reyes emerged as the 1st place finisher for the Men’s 21K run, while Renate Sairol from the Philippine Navy ran her way to victory in the 21K category for females.
According to SPO4 Eric Orillaneda, Jr. of the National Capital Region Training School (NCR-TS), Run for PEACE was held simultaneously to achieve - as the event acronym indicated - five defined goals: Plant the church; Equip Servant Leaders; Assist the poor; Care for the sick; and Educate the next generation. Explained Orillaneda: “The run was also held in response to the growing need for a culture of peace in the country.”
After the run, the thirsty participants were quenched by drinking the newly introduced refreshment and health drink Pocari Sweat, of which there was a free supply throughout the whole event. “We are staunch supporters of event like this,” said Apollo Casuga, Product Manager of the official beverage sponsor of the NCR run. “Beyond promoting an active and fit lifestyle, we also wish to partner closely with other organizations, whose initiatives help develop and empower local Philippine communities.”
To show the company’s commitment, Casuga added that Pocari Sweat will then be holding Run for Fun: A Fitness and Health Marathon 2007.
“We have scheduled the event on July 1 at The Block in SM North EDSA,” he said. “Many have expressed their interest already; in fact, several runners here have already registered for our next run.”
