Manila is Asia’s most courteous city

Try as they might to hold doors open, to pick up someone’s papers or to say thank you when transacting at cashiers, it appears that Asians tend to believe that chivalry is dead.

In a recent “experiment” by Reader’s Digest on courtesy, Asia ranked at the bottom half of 35 countries with Manila ranking at 21. The 3 experiments on courtesy involved RD staff dropping papers, checking for people who open doors and finding out which cashiers say “Thank you” after a transaction. A point was given for each “success” and the average for each country placed it in the ranking with New York toping the list and Mumbai bottoming out at 35.

Having lived a number of years in seval countries of Asia, I guess I can’t quibble too much about Manila’s ranking … although Manila would certainly rank at the top of the list for young male security guards who seem to enjoy fondling my anciesnt. oversize kano backside.

But all the cities in all countries should immediately campagain for a recount .. the most shocking news is that New York came out on top … world-wide.

New York? Give me a break … I’ve lived in the US all my years I haven’t been living overseas, been to and done business in a majority of the US states and _NEW_YORK_ as the most courteous? Just couldn’t happen.

The fact that Reader’s Digest is headquartered in suburban New York couldn’t have added any bias, now could it? These results need to be submitted to the COMELEC or some other unbiased third party ;-)

When I first read about this in another blog, I was totally baffled. The “courtesy indicators” used in this test are so superficial, in my thinking. There is more to courtesy than just opening doors and saying “Thank you.”
