Great company, a cozy dining place and good food in one of Manila’s restaurant hubs spell a wonderful night. Two Fridays ago I met with some blog pals, mommies who are well into gastronomic adventures.

Dining at an Italian restaurant located at Tomas Morato, Bellissimo Ristorante, was a good experience. The serving time is fast enough and the staff quick to check on our needs. The best seller is their Aglio Olio with anchovies and Pasta Montano.

No wonder the owner of the restaurant, actor Cesar Montano, stamped it with his name. See the picture on the top right. It has a generous filling of cheese, red sauce and sausage. The sausage completes the full flavor of the pasta.

The interior is something of interest. There’s a brick oven, a deli, collection of wines and the paintings on the walls are feasts for the eyes. Try the place when you’re in the vicinity.

I was going to my office building one morning when I noticed a group of people milling around near the building’s entrance. I got curious what could it be that they were so all agog about. So there’s a man selling taho (soy bean curd) to everyone’s delight.

Taho vendors are everywhere. They go around different neighborhoods, in school vicinities. You can even spot them in major highways, some even ride public utility vehicles with their huge taho buckets in tow. They have this distinct tone of voice letting people know they have arrived, “taho! taho!”. Can you miss that? And now I see them in central business districts. Taho had been reinvented by selling them in different flavors in specialty restaurants. The flavor is not anymore confined to plain soy bean. There are tahos that come in capuccino, chocolate and even strawberry flavors.

Have a cup when you encounter your friendly neighborhood taho vendor.

Now you see them, now you don’t. When will they ever finish cleaning, repainting our EDSA? Or will it ever get done in the first place? They are usually seen at the busiest streets at the busiest time of the day. This is another cause for the rush hour traffic. And sometimes, going through Ayala Tunnel, there aren’t any warning signs that there’s work in progress. That’s dangerous for them and the motorists. I commend the efforts of making our city clean but I just hope there’s a better way of implementing this.

Officially we only have two seasons in Manila – dry, which lasts from October to June and wet for the rest of the months. We experience the most humid weather on summer months which lasts from March to May. The rainy season normally starts from July to September. I guess we are in for a third kind of season. Somebody from PAG-ASA (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) has got to think of a name for the weather we are currently experiencing – heavy downpour in between a still-summer-hot day.

Less than two weeks ago, PAG-ASA announced the last week of May is already the start of the rainy season. We did experince a lot of rain before the announcement. It was as if the change of season was so abrupt. But then again, where is the rainy season we thought is here already? That could have been a welcome respite from the heat Manila is still experiencing at this point. In any case, it’s best to bring an umbrella with you especially if you are commuting. It also happens that the weather from one city to another is different. It could be scorching hot in Makati but it’s raining wild in Quezon City. Weird weather.

It’s very attractive with its 70s theme (though the colors are like the 80s). A red van, a combi, serves as a kitchen counter and a 3d mural covering the wall of the kitchen. Vinyl long playing records serve as wall decors. I have to explain to my eight year old daughter that DVDs evolved from these round with hole in the middle black things . There’s also a rotating disco mirror ball hanging in the dining area. Their specialty is pancake but I like the angus beef cooked Pinoy style. The pancake my daughter ordered is cute though – Jackson 5 – five chocolate pancakes with chocolate syrup and cream on top.

I was going around Star City with my daughter and other relatives a few weeks back when I saw this sign. I couldn’t help but smile. If you suddenly got short of money for your perks but badly needs a quick massage, you might want to try this one for only twenty bucks, roughly .42 cents (using the US dollar conversion rate as of this time). Massage for less, why not. :D
